Amazing concept! So would this Dark Centurion be chasing after Christians and handing them over to the Roman government or would he be on the Christians' side? How would he view the Jewish rebels in 66 AD?
You know, that's a great question! Honestly, I don't think a Roman Batman would take sides in that fight, any more than the modern Batman gets involved in religion or politics. The closest thing to police that Romans had was the Praetorian Guard, so street crime was exponentially worse. Robberies and murders were just something that happened, and they often went unpunished. If someone couldn't hire private protection, they were vulnerable, and if they couldn't hire a good lawyer, they had no legal recourse. I think the Dark Centurion and his people would focus mostly on street crime, and maybe take out the occasional rotten senator. That does lead to an interesting question...there were no jails in Ancient Rome. Prisoners were given physical punishment, if they weren't executed outright. Would Batman have given a criminal over to be killed?
Have you read The Dark Knight Returns? There a big US/Soviet conflict on the island of Corto Maltese in that book that sets off a nuclear firefight. Batman basically just stays in Gotham and takes care of what he can in the aftermath, rather than going off to CM and getting directly involved in the military conflict. I feel like this version of Batman would do the same thing during the Jewish rebellion, especially since any alliance with the government would put him in league with Nero, who would probably be the closest thing they have to The Joker
This is awesome! I love these designs, especially Batgirl and Robin, completely badass those two. Batman looks cool, mind you, but those two just really stand out to me. I'd love to see a full sketch of just their outfits (solos of Batgirl and Robin), since it looks like they're kinda cut off by the rest of the Batfamily in this shot, but this is still pretty awesome. Fave and watch for you .
Well thank you very much for faving and watching! You may very well see some full-body versions of Batgirl and Robin in the future. These designs were done pretty quickly, so I'd enjoy doing some more research into drawing the details.
You'd have to ask Gavin. I just asked for period-style costumes, he did the rest. I'm guessing Nightwing and Robin are squire-type assistants, and Batgirl is a knight herslf, but I could be wrong. Again, ask Gavin.
Ack! Fixed it! I actually drew a Roman Joker for you in the book; this is on a separate sheet of paper. The in-book sketches can get a little cramped, and I felt like the idea deserved a little more room
